Japanese Radiation found in Pacific Tuna
Avoid Pacific Bluefin Tuna, Radioactive or Not
from DiscoveryNews’ Christina Reed:
That marine biologists found elevated traces of radioactive Cesium in Pacific bluefin tuna is not reason enough to stop eating the fish. That the fish are often caught when they are only one or two years old and sold in markets and grocery stores before reaching maturity is.
Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) is fished unsustainably. In 2010 an international trade ban, which the United States supported, failed to draw the necessary votes to list bluefin tuna (both Pacific and Atlantic) under the protection of CITES Appendix I. The recognition would have listed the fish as threatened with extinction and prohibited international commercial trade. This type of protection is needed from the international community as without it even the Unites States continues to show weakness in taking stronger protection measures.
Whatever, back in Jersey we like our fish to glow in the dark.

June 1, 2009: Air France Flight 447 Crashes into the Atlantic
Three years ago today, Air France Flight 447 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean after taking off from Rio de Janeiro en route to Paris.
NOVA’s “Crash of Flight 447” special reconstructs the final moments of the Air France disaster.
I told Kara about this as we were flying home from London. I made a crack about how I hate to fly on Airbus planes and she demanded an explanation. This crash was mentioned in a very in depth one.
Arctic CO2 Hitting 400ppm. The last time global CO2 levels were 400 parts per million was 800,000 years ago. Gulp.
The 442nd Infantry was a unique facet of the US Army during the Second World War. It was a unit composed only of Asian Americans - a majority of which were of Japanese descent, many whose families were subject to internment despite their service. The 442nd fought solely in the Mediterranean and European theater where they were a self-sufficient force, fighting with uncommon distinction in Italy, southern France, and Germany during the war.
The unit became the most highly decorated regiment in the history of the United States armed forces with:
- 21 separate Medal of Honor recipients
- 52 Distinguished Service Crosses
- 560 Silver Stars (plus 28 Oak Leaf Clusters)
- 22 Legion of Merit Medals
- 15 Soldier’s Medals
- 4,000 Bronze Stars (plus 1,200 Oak Leaf Clusters)
- 9486 Purple Hearts
- 1 Distinguished Service Medal
On October 5, 2010 the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to the 442nd Regimental Combat team and 100th Infantry Battalion.

The Spring of 2012 Is the Hottest in U.S. History
In case, you know, you haven’t been outside in the past three month, it’s about to become official: unless a freak blizzard blankets the country by Thursday, the spring of 2012 will go down as the warmest for the U.S. in 117 years of record-keeping. The National Climatic Data Center won’t release a report on the temperatures in May until sometime in June, but based on their assessment of March and April, University of Maryland professor Steve Scolnik, who blogs at Climate Capital, says that our warm May will smash the 102-year-old record.
